Fashion and Fads of the 1960's
Mini Skirt
- 1960’s, youth wanted to start going against “morals” and “manners”
- British designer,Mary Quant opened a store with clothing that started to reflection emotion of the time.
- Raised the hemline of her skirts in 1965 to several inches above the knee, the iconic miniskirt was born
- Named after her favorite car, the Min
Mod Suits
- Clothes became more tight fitting during this area
- Mod suits style that emerged in England gave men a greater license when it came to the clothes that they wore, and there was an emergence of single breasted suits with short tailored jackets and relatively narrow lapels.
Shoes
- Knee-high boot:
- began wearing with mini-skirts
- super-high boots were considered the perfect accompaniment for these barely-there garments.
- There was a particular craze for white leather knee-high boot.
- Popular for men:
- Lace-ups or loafers.
- The Beatles inspired, the Chelsea boot
- this was a short, plain ankle boot with a low Cuban heel and a pointed toes
Sunglasses
- Oversized Sunglasses:
- Huge, bug-eyed, oversized sunglasses became the rage. Iconic women like first lady Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis made popular her large “Jackie O sunglasses.”
- Wayfarer Sunglasses
- First introduced in the 1960s. You would have spotted movers and shakers like Bob Dylan and Andy Warhol wearing wayfarer shades.
Hippie Fashion
- Some wore flowers in their hair, and had their bodies pierced or tattooed.
- The flowers in their hair and floral prints on clothes were used as symbols of peace and love.
- Women’s clothing was usually bright colored with unusual styles and also comprised of bellbottom pants, vests, tie-die garments, etc.
- Often paried with peasant-style blouses.
- Women also chose to wear flowing skirts.
- Men wore t-shirts, leather vests, combat style vests/jackets and granny glasses.
- Shirts made of tie-dye material became popular during the movemen
- Both men and women in the early 60’s wore jeans.
- Hipsters, bellbottoms, and Bohemian patches were worn with wide belts, knitted beanies and hemp necklaces
Flower Power
- “Make love, not war. Don't trust anyone over 30. Turn on, tune in, and drop out. I am a human being — please do not fold, bend spindle, or mutilate.” saying to live by during 1960s
- More and more children of middle-class Americans entered college. Many rejected the suburban conformity designed by their parents.
- New attitudes about drugs and sex, communal lifestyles, and innovations in food, fashion, and music, the counterculture youth of America broke almost all values pf their parents.
- Folk music was fused with rock.
- When The Beatles went psychedelic with their landmark album SGT Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band this type of music became mainstream.
- Lava Lamps, Tie Dye, Peace Signs etc.
The Twist
- Chubby Checker first performed the Twist on American Bandstand in 1962 to Hank Ballard’s tune of the same name.
- Told the audience that he invented the dance while drying himself with a towel after taking a shower.
- The twist was an expression of individualism
- no distinct roles for men or women, and the dancers danced apart.
- reflected attitude of culture
